STRONG FOUNDATION – 12/01/22 (Thursday of the First Week of Advent)

Matthew 7:24–27
Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.”

Blessed Thursday! It is a truth from God that not everyone will enter the Kingdom of heaven. Our Lord desires the salvation of all, but not everyone wants to accept the will of God and to follow the teachings of Christ. There are some people who think that it’s just ok to neglect the commandments of God, but this is far from reality. This should move us to examine our intention whether we have the desire to serve God and be united with Him, both here on earth and in heaven. This means that the word “Christian” is not merely a label, but it is our identity as followers of Christ which should always be accompanied by good works. Recognizing that we are children of God should lead us to be faithful to God’s plan for us. Through humility, we can know the truth about God’s mercy for us and the truth about our weaknesses. But, those who are guilty of pride and who are not open to the inspiration from God may endanger their souls because they are following their own opinions and wants, which are bad for their souls, instead of submitting to God’s will.

In the gospel reading, Jesus used two images which we should reflect upon. First, those who hear Him and follow Him are similar to people who built their house upon the rock. Jesus Christ is our strong foundation in spiritual and moral life if we will obey Him as our Lord. This can only happen if we realize that our purpose in life is not to seek riches, worldly achievements and success. Rather, it is to love God and make Him loved. It’s about sharing Christ’s love to our neighbors. Meanwhile, those who may not persevere in following Christ are like the people who built their house on sand. The truth is that God’s ways are higher than our ways, no matter how high we think of ourselves. And, when we fall to pride, we will lack peace in our hearts, and we may be carried away to committing more sins. God is our strong foundation. He alone can give us strength amidst all trials. Let’s take the time to reflect on our relationship with Him. If we see our faults, may we not lose hope because Jesus is calling us to trust in Him even more. He is giving us a message that He truly desires for us to have eternal life. Let’s take this opportunity to renew our love for Him with confidence that amidst our faults and sufferings, if we trust in Jesus, we will be protected from the temptations of the devil, we will find true peace, and we will have the hope of entering the Kingdom of heaven.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, be with us always until the hour of our death. Amen. +

May the Lord + bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. +
